The variations in pronunciation that Gary Shannon cites (if indeed they
are attested, and not just made up as I suspect) are all systematic and
largely predictable. The whole project of phonology is identifying and
predicting such patterns, and finding cognitive and physiological
reasons for their existence. And such do exist in abundance.

A fun game is to pick some arbitrary, unattested sound change and apply
it in your speech. One of my vavoridez is voizing all gonzonandz in
Englizh -- now, azg yourzelv why dhiz gange doezn'd oggur nadurally.
