There's no fixed "gender" for animals in English. I have a tendency to
call cats "she", but it's only a mild tendency. If a given cat is
acting in a way that seems male, I'd say "he". Dogs, on the other hand,
I often refer to as either "he" or "it", unless gender is known. "It"
is especially likely when the dog is particularly annoying. :-)
