Masc, fem. and neut. could still be used. After all, you aren't going to tell me that German uses the grammatical genders in the same way as biological sexes. Skirts masculine, jeans feminine and girls neuter... that's just random... (okay, so maedchen(sp) has a logical reason to be neuter... but if German *wasn't* sex-neutral in its genders, wouldn't it have become feminine pretty early on?). Or perhaps I've missed the point entirely... My year 9 German teacher use knife, fork and spoon for various reasons. Tristan
