There is "Romanisches etymologisches Wörterbuch" by Meyer-
Lübke
<http://worldcat.org/oclc/997460&referer=brief_results> This
is a dictionary of reconstructed Proto-Romance, which is a
Good Thing because what happened to be recorded in VL
inscriptions and Late Latin texts is highly incidental.

What we *really really* would need is an English-PrRom
index to this work, since it doesn't even contain a German-
PrRom index, though IIRC there exists one as a separate
work. I've been unable to retrieve that reference, though. I
know at least two or three romlangers who possess this
dictionary, so it would be possible to create such an index,
but part of the problem is that the definitions contain
obsolete and unusual German words not found in modern
German-English dictionaries.

Not really, since there are vocabulary differences, and it
is those which are the real problem.
