I have noticed that also. My friend Reiko was teaching us how to pronounce
her first name correctly. When she said it very slowly and clearly the "r"
sounded like an "l", To me it sounded as if she said "leiko". I think i
can remember my friend Naomi saying she had trouble hearing the difference
between her "l's" and "r's". Anyway, even with years of practice (they
have had about 8 years each), they still have a hard time differentiating
some of their sounds (Reiko was clear, Naomi was sometimes barely
understandable).
