Omeina:
1. If I am going to bake today, I will need some oil
Maida hurtua jaru, diranilo labu.
[Aux:intend + 1ps] [bake] [today], [Aux:need, must + 1ps-3p + if...then]
[oil]
Note: -lo is a suffix which tends to encapsulate the construction if...then
2. There is a shop down the road
Ormela malkin na
[holding-place] [road + durative ("along")] [Aux 3p]
3. I stroll towards it
Daubata niro da
[walk slowly] [to-it] [Aux:1ps]
> 4. A flood springs up and blocks the road.
Alargite dindieti, o lengua mal nain
[flood + erg] [spring up] [and] [stop, cut off] [road] [Aux:3p-3p]
Notes: dindi- means "to jump up, leap" so with the modifying suffix -eti
gets an active sense.
nain is the invariably heard form of an auxiliary with inanimate
subject acting on inanimate object. The "correct" form nani is hardly ever
heard.
> 5. another
> I turn to take another route.
Orto kostinalde ben mal da
[turn around] [pick + abstract + dat] [different] [road] [Aux.1p]
>
> 6. to split
> The earth splits beneath my feet, but I jump across just in time.
Riksu kar inda daudiadea na, tu dindi e nia nagusien da
[crack] [earth, ground] [under (takes loc.)] [feet-dual + my + loc]
[Aux:3p], [but] [leap] [across(takes loc.)] [at-it] [clse-timely] [Aux:1p]
>
> 7. to bleed
> I fell, though, and now my shin is bleeding.
Tu laksa da, o nai daude lurai na
[but] [fall] [Aux:1p], [and] [now] [leg-my] [bleed] [Aux:3p]
> 8. to continue
> I continue toward the shop.
Laimene ormelaro da
[go onward] [shop + adess.] [Aux:1p]
>
> 9. army
> The army stands to prevent access to the shop!
Arketa ano lenguainalde ormelaro na
[army] [stay, remain] ['for the stopping'] [shop + adess.] [Aux:3ps]
>
> 10. to run
> I run in regardless, grab the oil, fling some money on the counter, and
run back out!
>
Tanta nia lengimendi da, rangeti labu dain, gireti argendu naltoa dain, o
tantande nínen da.
[run] [into-it] ['stoplessly'] [Aux:1p], [seize] [oil] [I-it], [fling, dash]
[money] [table + loc] [I-it],
[and] [run-again] [out of - it] [Aux.1p]
Note: argendu 'money' is one of only a handful of Omeina words borrowed from
IE.
> 11. home
> But now I can't get home past the flood and ravine.
Tu nai beheda algero alargiste o rikuste
[but] [now] [Not-Aux:"can" + 1p] [home + adess] [flood + instr] [ravine +
instr]
A good vocab! Lots of good concepts and a welcome lack of silliness! (dons
Monty Python voice...)
