I don't think so, because an isolated sentence often does not provide
the disabiguating information that would make it perfectly acceptable
in normal conversation.
Some sentences in German also feel strange in isolation, but when you
listen to taking people, it's amazing what is generated without
causing a raise of an eyebrow with the listener.
