Pretty much from eachother. On sees it from a friends car and wants to
copy it. I dont think many were going for the "hot-rod" style. In fact if
they were, they would be having their parents buy them mustangs, etc.
instead of acuras, etc.
Unfortunately my brother is falling into this trap.

I will agree that yes, it's a symptom of materialistic values. Take my
brother for instance. in HS he was all about clothes, shoes, things. Just
like the rest of his friends (who were primarily Asian). He put material
value over family sometimes (he constantly complained the house wasnt nice
enough, or that we didnt give him enough things).
I always looked at it like this: I can replace things. I can buy new
shoes, noew jeans, etc. However, i can never replace my family, and that's
the important thing.
