Standard spelling words such as "guest" vs. "gesture".

Back when the Mary/marry/merry question last came up I mentioned that
/&r/ seemed to be illegal in my dialect, but since then realized that it
occurs in "arrow", which has a different initial vowel than "marry".

For me the difference between these vowels is more noticable than the
difference between the vowels in "fairy" and "ferry". The latter pair can
sound similar in rapid speech, but not the former.
