the library near my house happens to have all of the books in the
"earth's children" (clan of the cave bear) series by jean m. auel, even
though it doesn't have a latin dictionary.
in the 4th book, _plains of passage_, there's a map that shows the
various different tribes that Ayla meets on her travels. she starts in
the Crimea, where her tribe of the Clan (neanderthals) lives, and then
goes north into where russia is , then southwest to the mouth of the
danube, and then up the danube past it's source into france.
the names of the different tribes of cro-magnons, or Others (as the Clan
calls them) are:
Mamutoi
Sharamudoi
Hadumai
S'Armunai
Losadunai
Lanzadonii ({ii} = /ji/)
Zelandonii
each of these tribal names seems to mean "earth's (or Mother Earth's)
children", with some kind of genitive marker /i/ on the second, "earth"
part of the compound. for instance, the losadunai call their earth
mother goddess Duna, and the zelandonii call her Doni, if i remember
correctly. i think the mamutoi call her Mut, though, without a final
vowel.
the _s'_ in s'armunai is an honorific, also attached to names of people.
i think the _sharamudoi_ is a blending of _shamudoi_ and _ramudoi_, two
tribes which live together.
