Actually, they don't HAVE to be that way. True, since the resonance chamber
involved - the mouth alone - is small compared to that of glottalic and
pulmonic consonants, greiter pressure gradients and thus louder releases are
achievable, but with smaller tongue moovments you can soften them to
basically whisper. (The same principle also applies to glottalic
consonants.)
