When l is final,it becomes > /w/, but is written as /u/ (i'm not sure if what i'm thinking is written > correctly here, but bear with me: > > arbol > arbou, alcól (alcohol) > alcóu, sal > sau > > Also final r becomes l (this happens a little later in the language than > the l > /w/: > > faular > faulal, andar > andal, ir > il > > thoughts? >
French had it in coda position before another consonnant (but generally the resulting /w/ then disappeared by monophtongation, resulting only in a change of quality of the previous vowel). For example: Latin ALBA -> aube /ob/ Latin ALMA -> âme /am/ (this one's strange, the circumflex would account for a written form *asma?) Germanic HELM (English helmet) -> heaume /om/ "Roumant" has the change /l/ -> /u/, written <ou> (yes, the vowel, not the semi-vowel) in all coda positions: QUALIS -> cuêou /'kE.u/ (hiatus or diphtongue, but <ou> is never <w>) APRILIS -> aprêou ALTUS -> âout Christophe.
