I haven't worked out any birthing metaphors for Gevey yet, but the
general feeling is that a newborn child is to be comiserated for
having to endure another lifetime on Kalieda (the planet), and in the
meantime deserves all the love and attention it can get, to make its
traumatic passage into this life as bearable as possible.
At the other end, death seems to be a celebration of a person's life
achievements, tinged with sadness that s/he is no longer around to
share the delights and disfunctions of Gevey life, but happy that s/he
is finally returning to their true home.
