Interesting. Indeed, the Swedish vowels I heard sound very different from German, too, and I did have the same impression that they are slightly diphthongised. The same in many Dutch dialects (I was actually very confused that [e:] was the transscription of a long _e_ in Dutch, since I constantly mixed it up with _ij_. After a while, I could distinguish them and now pronounce them [eI)] and [&I)]). **Henrik
