English, of course, has no official spelling anywhere.  Its various
orthographies are locked in by Hartree-Fock processes.

I didn't say it wasn't so, I said it was irregular.

If you don't like it, change /usr/share/units.dat, which is a plain text
file and trivially easy to hack for things like this.
