When I wrote my previous reply, I hadn't seen this question. You really would enjoy Palmer's book, _Grammatical roles and relations_, which is available from Amazon and not too dear. Palmer is not only a competent and wise linguist, he writes miles better than most other linguists, and his book starts out from the basics, so anyone should be able to follow his argument. Blake's _Case_ (in the same Cambridge University Press series, textbooks in Linguistics) might appeal to you too, but it is very much concerned with the whole cornucopia of cases, and less with the core grammatical relations of subject, agent, patient.
