We can use phi for potential too, but in France it's used as a general label
for scalar potentials, so that we have to use other letters when we define
specific potentials (V for the electric potential for instance :) ). There's
only one case when we use phi for a specific potential: in fluid dynamics for
the velocity potential in non-viscous flows. But that's because it's not much
used, so it doesn't need a specific label.
