I only have one case to judge from, and I've noted that she's not
necessarily typical. On the other hand, a lot of learning to read is just
getting to the point that it's worth doing. Once the motivation is there,
the learning process is often very quick.
I can see that an easier orthography might "prime the pump" and release the
desire to read. I'm watching my duaghter learn to read, and there's a real
barrier until you've learned a whole bunch of special cases (and not quite
rigid rules) by rote. And until you're through that barrier, the parental
reading unit is a more effective way to get stories out of books.
