Hmm, I don't remember that. But he was certainly opinionated about
linguistics. I remember having a very long and very tiring semi-private
exchange with him about the nature and validity of various kinds of
linguistic data. He was shocked shocked shocked that I would dare to
use (*gasp!*) elicited data and grammaticality judgements in my
analyses. All 'real' linguists, he claimed, know that grammaticality
judgements are meaningless and that the only valid source of data is
texts. Whatever, Mark...
