In OE we have a tripartite division of society: one may be an
_eorl_ 'nobleman', _ceorl_ 'freeman who is not noble', or _theow_
'thrall/bondsman'. The last is lost; the two previous became "earl"
(partly under the influence of _jarl_) and "churl" respectively, with
pejoration of the latter.
