taking what I do know, though, doesn’t it make more sense for SLM in Arabic
to mean peace? “salaam” is Arabic for peace, right?

If you pronounce it quickly, the word "the peace" can sound like
[Isla:m], since it'd be (technically) [?@s:ala:m].
