I quite concur, and commented on this in my earlier post (whipped dead horse as
rhetorical device), but if the French is the "original," (1912? France?) that's
what, IMNSHO should be dealt withtranslated first; then you can get into the
"what happens when the translator has finer skills than the original writer",
writhing in Sturm und Drang discussion and offer other renditions (which may
resonate better in and for lang. X). For my part, I found a Japanese rendition
in my peregrinations which worked for me at :

Was based on the English version (there seemed to be a lot of that floating in the
ether for a number of languages), and seemed to have a cadence that the French
woefully lacks. *Dreadful* funerary site offered it in a number of langs in
quirky, unhappy machine translation.
To be sure, left to my own devices, I' d tighten it up mucho in G
