I'd suggest {-}, but since you can't stand it, you might as well go on
using {'} as long as it doesn't cause any confusion. Personally, I use {'}
for glottal stops, ejectives, the unwritten epenthetic schwas in Tirelat,
separating pairs of letters that otherwise would look like digraphs, and
various other uses. Hinate~, the new Zireen language I'm starting to
develop (still in its early stages), uses both apostrophes: {'} for
ejectives and {`} for aspirated stops. (I don't use {h} to mark aspiration,
since Hinate~ has a [T] sound, spelled {th} in the romanized version. It
looks better in Word, which uses the comma-shaped single quotes, and the
Polish nasal mark for nasalized vowels.)
