I think grad students like Patrick are cut more slack than professors
like Sally.
Though... though...
I remember one time when I was having dinner with the other two
members of my medieval Latin class (grad-level) and the professor, and
I mentioned having been in another town recently, and when they asked
me what I was doing there, I somewhat reluctantly mentioned that I was
attending a Society for Creative Anachronism event...
From the looks I got, I would have done better to say I was there
attending a Livestock Molester's Convention.
I suspect the same principle holds with conlanging, though I hadn't
heard of conlanging yet back when I was in grad school.
