Don't keep up with current events much, eh? Samarra is in Iraq;
US-led coalition forces recaptured it this weekend. Therefore the
language is presumably Arabic.
Rodlox: I don't know what the Arabic rhotic sound is, but if the news
reports you're watching are in any language *other* than Arabic, the
anchor person almost certainly mispronounced the name. :)
