He did not find Gaelic attractive, unlike Welsh.
In one of his letters, he writes "I have no liking at all for Gaelic from Old
Irish downwards, as a language, but it is of course of great historical and
philiological interest." (Letter # 297 in _Letters of JRR Tolkien_)
He makes similar remarks elsewhere, I believe, but that's the only reference
that I have handy.
(In the same letter, he notes an accidental resemblance between Gaelic and
The Black Speech. "Ring" is "nasg" in Scottish Gaelic, and "nazg" in Black
Speech.)
