Yes, it's quite a common sound. I believe it occurs in Spanish and some
dialects of German as well. The IPA symbol is a kind of small upright greek
gamma. I'm not sure what the X-SAMPA version is, but would expect it to be
/G/ - though of course I stand to be corrected!
