There are old characters for "wi" and "we" in Hiragana.  Those
syllables
were lost at some point, becoming simply "i" and "e", just as "wo"
became "o".  Unfortunately, I don't know of a page where you can find
those old characters.

Yes. {wi} looks somewhat like the hiragana {ru} except the middle bit
that sticks out to the left has become a loop, and {we} looks like
hiragana {ru} on top of a quickly written fire radical, I think.
