I made the first thing in Ilaini (a variant of a Dutch children's
song) on the bike and wrote it down in the Roman alphabet, more or
less phonetically, when I got home. Then I made up some more words
(and already had names for people and places) that I also wrote down
in the Roman alphabet.
All the time I knew that Valdyans didn't write like "us", but had
their own script; I didn't work that out until much later, however.
I still use romanization to work on texts and translations, because
it speaks to me more; I sometimes use the script to do fair copies. I
should really be using it more, but I do most things on the computer,
and the font doesn't type well (anyway, it doesn't work on my present
installation, but that's being worked on).
