Saying Hi

Hi to everyone on this list,

I'm a 18 year old guy living in the Netherlands, Europe. I have been
conlanging since I was about ten or eleven and some friends of mine and
myself wanted to create a cypher, and I remember suggesting that we would
create our own language rather than a cypher. My friends were totally set
off by this idea and never mentioned creating a cypher again. Since that
time I have felt that it was weird to create your own words or sounds, or
even to be enthusiastic about learning languages. So, until I read my
parents copy of the Dutch translation of J.R.R. Tolkien's books set in
Middle-Earth conlanging was not a part of my activities.

For me the internet opened my eyes about languages, linguistics and finally,
conlanging when I found the Zompist Bulletin Board (where I lurk around
sometimes). But, save for 1 or 2 times I never felt the need to post
something. I was younger at the time and actually never felt like I had
anything interesting to contribute.

Since May 2005 I have been a subscriber to the CONLANG mailing list. But I
never read much of it and about a year ago I sorted the e-mails away from
view. A few weeks ago I was tidying up my e-mail sorting and discovered I
still had those e-mail from the mailing list coming, and my interest was
reignited. Since I recently saw some of the video's recorded on the first
conlang congress (er.. is that the right name?) I've searched for and found
my old notes back and started working on one of my old conlangs. And for the
first time I've felt a need to share my experiences with this with other
people... and also to discuss about our hobby in general, as I've never
really done that in real life.

So, that's kind of my story, and my un-closeting or something... I hope you
didn't find that too boring. Perhaps I will post something about my language
in the near future.

Sincerely,

Nick Scholten
