I wanted to comment on this. Bast fibers are the strong woody fibers
obtained from the phloem of woody plants, which conduct food through
the plant. Raffia is obtained from the petiole bases of Raphia
farinifera, a palm from Africa (east Africa and Madagascar).
The genus Raphia includes a species with the longest leaves on the
planet - up to 80 feet long. They belong to Raphia regalis, which
looks almost trunkless, and more like a massive shuttle cock, or
feather duster.
