It occured to me that it might be helpful to
substitute sentences of identical structure that
weren't quite as dated or culture-specific.
As you pointed out, even the simplest sentences
sometimes lead to complex considerations. The very
first sentence is not the conceptually simple: "_A_
bird _IS_ singing." but the much more abstract "Birds
(in general) sing (habitually)."
