What about when only the presence or absence of a diacritic distinguish two words, like, se/sé? Japanese ignores the voicing and p-diacritics except when those are all that distinguish two words (which is fairly often), so that, for example, you'll have: Haha: mother Haba: width, breadth (h+voicing = b) Baba: Old woman Papa: Father [western origin] (h+diacritic = p) Hahakata: maternal (as in "maternal uncle"), on one's mother's side. -- "There's no such thing as 'cool'.
