Lars is right -- you don't. It happens even in tiny countries like Japan -- take the difference in regionalisms between Kanto (E.Japan) and Kansai (W.Japan) or even Tohoku (N.Japan) - let's not even mention Okinawa or Kagoshima area. I'll have to ask my friends for good examples of clear-cut discrepancies in meanings of the same word, as I can't come up with anything off the top of my head. I do recall that my ex-partner (native Kanto/Tokyoite) burst in laughter at me once, one night years ago, when I turned to him and asked with in earnest "nani ga shitai?" The problem, he later pointed out, was that my (American) intonation got into the way of my intended asking "what you do to do?", and it came out as "you feel like doing it?" He then told me that being American, I ought to try living in Osaka, where the intonation almost completely is the opposite of the standard (Tokyo) Japanese!
