Re: Spanish education

Hello, guys.

As a spanish-native speaker (I guess there are more than one in CONLANG), I
have to confess that we tend to emphasize more our differences than our
similarities. It is true, as Mike said once, that every country thinks of
its own way of speaking as the most natural and rejects the others. With the
increasing globalization of media (soap operas included), this is changing,
but very slowly.

As an example, latin-americans WILL NEVER watch a movie dubbed into spanish
with any accent from Spain. NEVER. Some ones just laugh at it, some others
cannot stand it at all.

Differences are less important than similarities. Please, do not ever think
that we cannot understand each other. The grammar is the same all over. Only
words (especially slang) change their meanings. I can give you several
examples:

1) The word used in Venezuela (where I come from) for a "baseball cap" and
the word venezuelans use for "shell" are considered vulgarities in Argentina
and they designate the vagina.

2) The same things happens with with the word Venezuelans use for "jacket"
which means "vagina" (in slang) in Mexico.

3) Fruits have different names depending on the country.

4) In Argentina and some other countries, people use "vos" instead of the
standard "tu" (the informal way of saying "you"), and the verbs changes
accordingly, but, even so, we do understand each other.
