In Australian unis, and it seems in British ones as well, what I call
subjects, Chris seems to call modules, and what Americans appear to
call courses, have different weightings. When you have completed all
the core subjects and have attained the right number of credit points,
you have completed what Australians call your course and you can
graduate and get your degree.
The subjects have different weightings, depending on the length of time
and the amount of work involved. The exact weighting scheme differs
between Unis in Melbourne so I don't know if I can generalise as far as
Chris's experience, but one common scheme has 10 credit points for a
light one-semester subject, 15 for a mid-to-heavy one-semester subject,
and 20 for an überheavy one-semester subject (used by my Uni, La Trobe,
and at least one other in Melbourne, which qualifies for common, but at
least one other uses a different scheme).
I would assume, then, that Chris is talking about a light subject.
