To throw my coin into the melee:

The Elves (yes, I always spell them with a capital 'E') in my con-world
are simply humans, with all shortcomings, though they tend to be
taller and more slender than most other human nations.
This means that there are wise men (and women) among them,
but there is also the usual share of fools.  They aren't saints,
but they also aren't evil schemers.  They just want to live
in peace, prosperity and freedom.  They also aren't anything
like tree-hugging forest imps, though respect of nature is
important in their culture.  In fact, they are culturally sophisticated
and technologically advanced.

Actually, the main reason why they are called "Elves" is that they once
had an advanced civilization in the British Isles that is the root of
Germanic and Celtic tales of 'elves' (and possibly, also of the Atlantis myth).

The languages of the Elves are of the "active" type and probably
related to Indo-European.  (And they are phonologically similar
to Tolkien's Elvish languages.)
