Interesting! I've been annoyed lately to see a few fonts where the <fi> ligature is such that the hook of the <f> ends to the left of the <i>, so instead of the hook of the <f> and the dot of the <i> merging, the dot is just left out. I'm not certain, but I think I've also seen instances where the dot and the hook are left separate, but the dot is moved over to the left.
