Ah, so that's why you won't make the adjectives "-i", it is a fait-accompli of the near-future.

Today we think of French, Italian, etc as distinct, but in the past they merged gradually between Rome and Paris with no borders, each village speaking its own mini-dialect that was understood by all its neighbors. It is difficult to write a textbook on grammar telling people they speak "wrong", because you'd need a chapter for each village ...
