Indeed, if I *press* my tongue, the sound does have a lateral sound added, but
it's hardly a palatal l (it lacks the "liquid" feel, i.e. it's too open). If I
don't press the tongue but merely leave it on the palate, I can't distinguish
this sound from a normal /i/.
