Interesting; I had heard this about "cardinal vowels" (that they are, strictly speaking, passed on from master to student and "cannot" be conveyed by recordings or descriptions in writing), but hadn't about IPA "platinum-iridium" pronunciations. Cheers, -- Philip Newton <philip.newton@...>
