Translation Relay Rules

From:Sally Caves <scaves@...>

Okay, here's how it works, for those of you who are new (most of
you aren't): I send my original text with extensive linguistic
explanation (but not a translation) to the first person on the
list (or whoever decides to go first). That person, taking
no longer than forty-eight hours, maybe seventy-two, translates
my text into his or her conlang and sends it with extensive
linguistic explanation to the next person, and so forth and
so on. Just like a conlang "telephone," the meaning of the
text will change slightly with each translation, but I ask all
of you to be as faithful as you can to the text you receive
while still remaining faithful to your own language.
Everyone will see only the language and explication of the
previous conlanger.

The last person on the list will send his or her conlang
translation back to ME, and I will translate it into Teonaht,
bringing the relay full circle. Then we all post publically
our conlang versions and a smooth English translation. And
eventually, if I have time, I'll put it on my website. It
will be the second Translation Relay Game of 1999, Irina's
Starling poem being the first.

My text is a little longer than Irina's... eight instead of
four lines. If anyone thinks that's too long, let me know
and I'll try to shorten it. But I've worked hard to produce
something that has some substance but could stand to be rewritten.
We have to insist that no one who has committed to the Game
hold the relay up by taking longer than two or three days to
translate. To keep my exhortations and all other comments off
the list, I'll make a group list for relayers with an order and
and exchange of emails.

Here's who has expressed an interest so far:

        Matt Pearson
        John Roth
        Steg Belsky
        Boudewijn Rempt (new!)
        Irina Rempt
        Rob Nierse (new!)
        Christopher Grandsire
        Pablo Flores
        Dirk Elzinga (I think new)
        Dennis Paul Himes (new!)
        Nicole (new, I think)
        Adam Parrish

I'd like to extend invitations to Doug Ball, our newcomer, to Herman
Miller again
(can we persuade you?), John Cowan for Lojban, and Jerry Koenig for
NGL. Now is
the time to respond to me privately if you want to be added or
subtracted. Unlike
the last game, I'm going to declare the Relay closed, so that no one can
get added
on belatedly. That just causes too much confusion. So speak up now!
I'll start
this on Monday once you have let me know that you're in or you're out.
I also
reserve the right to drop anybody from the game who holds it up at a
later time.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Sally
