For myself, it seems to be simply /&~/, that is, the only difference
between the vowels of "can" [in the sense of metal container - in the
auxiliary, it's often reduced to a schwa] and "cat" is nasalization and
length (related to the allophonic shortening before unvoiced obstruents)
