Well, sort-of. [dZ)] is an affricate, [dZ] is ambiguous between a cluster and an affricate. The difference is quite minimal, except in cases there a syllable boundary would fall within the cluster - [ad.Za] vs [a.dZa] might very well be contrastive somewhere. I find it hard to imagine any lang would distinguish them in other contexts, but you should never say never. A cluster might be unambiguously indicated as [d-Z]. Of course, if syllable boundaries are bing indicated, putting one inbetween the 'd' and the 'Z' also forces a cluster interpretation ([d.Z)] should be meaningless). Andreas
