That's different. The halving of vowels must have happened a while ago.
As Christophe Grandsire said, it was a Saxon warrior who terrorized and
split those poor doubled vowels. There haven't been many Saxon warriors
anymore (now they're British). Aardvark is too recent for the Saxon.
