Welcome! I am 17 and have been homeschooled as well (I highly recommend
it, although not, perhaps, at the cost of a very painful injury). Re
books--others have mentioned this but I would just like to add my
recommendation for David Crystal's _Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language_,
which covers nothing in depth but touches on just about everything.
BTW, speaking of essays, does anyone know if the Lexical Semantics texts
are still available? I seem to recall that last time I went looking for
them I was unable to locate them.
