Sorry - I left out "of". It should have read: "In VL prevocalic _i_ was always [j] with consequent palatalization of the preceding consonant." Whether any consonant follows or not is not relevant. What I mean is that the Classical Latin CiV (two syllables) will be rendered as CjV (one syllable in VL, and the C before (preceding) the [j] is subject to palatalization. Ray.
