Rather reminds me of a book I read in which one of the alien races was a
symbiotic race, one half was arachnoid, and the other half nautiloid.
Because of the high gravity on the planet, the land-based arachnoids
were unable to develop high intelligence (brain takes too much energy),
but they formed a symbiotic relationship with the intelligent
nautiloids. Essentially, the two bonded at adulthood, with the
nautiloid "riding" the arachnoid. The arachnoid could survive under
water with the help of the nautiloid, but the nautiloid was restricted
to the water, without the buoyancy of water, they'd be crushed on
land. Anyways, the two had a telepathic bond which enabled the
arachnoids to construct high technology on land, including electricity
which they were able to wire down to the water, making life easier for
their nautiloid mates.
