I think we'll find that life exists just about everywhere on or _in_ the earth. I read a recent article about microbes that were found _in_ rock fissures and the like which were excavated out of the bottoms of South African gold mines. Certainly no photosynthesis there either. If Mars ever had life, I'd bet it still does and plenty of it. I think I'd even not be surprised if the Moon were found to be not utterly barren.
