Actually, that's a pretty good argument for keeping the
prefix.  Not the ambiguity, since language has never had
a problem with that, but the fact that these nouns are so
pervasive.  As far as I know (can't think of any others),
"another" is the only such word in English.  If there were
tons, maybe things would be different.  And since the
difference between "another" and "an other" is trivial (if,
indeed, there is a difference at all), but the difference between
all the /i-/ words is sometimes great, I guess I have to
keep it, and just not worry about the "another" issue.
